Once you have purchased your new crystal it is good practice to cleanse it. After sitting on a shelf in a shop crystals can absorb lots of untoward energies as they can potentially be handled by many people over time: There are many ways you can do this
- Running Water: Is the method that immediately springs to mind. This can be managed at home simply by holding the crystal under the kitchen or bathroom tap. Make sure that the water is tepid rather than hot or cold. If you have access to a stream or river
- Sunlight/Moonlight: Placing crystals in direct sunlight or moonlight, often for a full day or night, is thought to purify and enhance the crystal’s energy. MOONLIGHT: The light of the full moon is thought to be particularly beneficial for your crystals, but be sensible. If you know the sun will be up before you, make sure you take your crystals off the window ledge. SUNLIGHT especially should be avoided for some light sensitive crystals, for example Amethyst is one of several stones that can fade if left in sunlight for extended periods. Most importantly NEVER EVER LEAVE A CRYSTAL BALL OR SPHERE ON YOUR WINDOW LEDGE OR EXPOSED TO ANY OTHER DIRECT SUNLIGHT. IT CAN CAUSE FIRE.
- Earth Burial: Burying crystals in the earth for a period of time is said to ground their energies and cleanse any negativity. This works well if you have a private garden, however pop any damp sensitive or water sensitive crystals in a plastic zip-lock bag to protect them. A bowl of brown rice can be used as a substitute.
- Salt Water: Soaking crystals in salt water is another traditional method, but it’s important to be cautious as salt can damage certain minerals.
- Smoke Cleansing: The smoke from an incense stick, sage stick, palo santo or other cleansing herb is believed to clear negative energy from crystals. If you are not sure which method is best to cleanse your crystal, this is probably the safest.
Each method has its own traditions and is chosen based on the type of crystal and the intention behind the cleansing. It’s always best to research or consult an expert for the appropriate method for your specific crystal.
