A Brief History of The Healing Star
Our Past
To the best of my knowledge, The Healing Star was founded sometime in the middle of the 1990’s by Sophia Francis, and was situated on Chapel Street in Penzance. The shop was intended to be an outlet for Star Child of Glastonbury, her family’s business. We are still proud stockists of Star Child’s high quality, essential oils, incenses, teas and other botanical products today.
Under her care, we gained The Stellar Maris Centre for Esoteric Studies, known to us as “the back room” as a space for Yoga, group work, meetings, healing and therapies.
By 2000 the business had been sold to Pamela Masterson. Pam was a yoga teacher, kabbalist, magician, priestess and astrologer, to name a few of her many skills. She had areal talent and passion for teaching and education. Denver, our most memorable and maybe best loved shop assistant held sway at front of house. It has been many years since he left, but his kindness and compassion are remembered by visitors to the shop still today.
Our Present
I’m Lorna. I joined the Healing Star family sometime around 2003, armed with a lot of certificates in Healing and Holistic Therapies. I worked as one of several in house therapists. I discovered magical work, a spiritual “something” and a place to belong. I have filled in as cleaning lady, window dresser and shop assistant as the need arose. I also performed my first (and definitely last!) tarot reading.
In 2014 after battling serious ill health, Pam decided to retire. I was honoured and quite frankly terrified to find that I had been entrusted with half the business. Sadly at the end of the following year Pam lost her battle with cancer. It was humbling and moving to discover what a place our shop occupied in people’s hearts both locally and further afield.
In 2016 I signed the lease as sole owner and began my solo adventure through what would prove some very challenging times.
Our Future
I could say “If I had a crystal ball” and struggle to keep a straight face!
